‘Peeping Tom’ killed mum so he could abuse her child

WELLINGTON, New Zealand: A man who beat a woman to death with a steel mallet to sexually abuse her 12-year-old daughter has been imprisoned indefinitely.

The offense labelled by the Crown prosecutor as being at a high level of “cruelty, brutality, depravity and callousness”, happened in the affluent suburb of Karori.

The 31-year-old saw his victims, the 52-year-old woman and her daughter, on April 4 and stalked them into a house while carrying a mallet.

The mother died while defending her daughter, who lay unconscious after being hit by a mallet.

As the woman was dying on the floor, Joseph William Borton undressed the girl and sexually violated her, telling her “it’s okay”.

Nearly 18 hours after the attack, he called the emergency services and said he had killed the woman, referring himself as the “peeping Tom”.

Borton pleaded guilty in the High Court at Wellington in August to all charges, including murder, sexual violation, indecent assault, wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and several theft charges.

A scene examination uncovered the bloodied mallet in a bathroom sink with various other items, including a used condom.

Borton told police he intended to “incapacitate” the 52-year-old so he could sexually offend against the daughter.
