Australia’s national science agency and takeaway tycoon to make ‘fake-meat’ fast food

CANBERRA, Australia: Australia’s national science agency, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), has teamed up with the Australian billionaire fast food chain to make and market fake-meat burger.

The Rebel Whopper, a plant-based alternative to the beef burger, is the creation of v2food – a joint venture between the CSIRO and Jack Cowin’s Competitive Foods Australia.

Legume-based v2food’s burger patty aims to replicate the taste and texture of real beef with the help of the science agency.

Curtin University nutrition and public health researcher Christina Pollard has warned against assuming these patties as the healthier alternative to the meat-based diet.

Beef producers are demanding for removal of meat-related branding from such products.

The number of meat-free burger products in Australia has grown 289% since 2010, according to the George Institute for Global Health.

The CSIRO projects the plant-based protein industry in Australia to be worth more than $6 billion by 2030.
