21 injured in latest Melbourne tram derailment

MELBOURNE, Australia: A tram derailed and smashed through a fence in the suburb of Kew after colliding with a car, on Sunday.

At least 21 people were injured after the 109 tram thrashed into a yard.

Seven senior citizens were taken to the hospitals with various injuries including head pain, shoulder and back soreness.

The tram was travelling on Cotham Road when it had an accident; several passengers fell on top of each other while a baby landed on shattered glass.

“We are thankful no one was seriously injured in Sunday’s incident,” a Yarra Trams spokesperson said on Monday.

The tram has been off tracks at least three times over the years since 2013 according to official reports.

Last year on average three vehicle and tram collisions were recorded each day.
