Immigrants who cannot pay for healthcare not allowed to enter US: Trump

WASHINGTON, USA: President Donald Trump has signed a proclamation suspending entry of immigrants not covered by health insurance within 30 days of entering the United States or do not have the means to pay for their healthcare costs.

However, the presidential proclamation issued by the White House on Friday said it would not affect any individual’s eligibility for asylum or refugee status.

The suspension applies only to people seeking entry into the country with an immigrant visa.

“The entry into the United States as immigrants of aliens who will financially burden the United States healthcare system is hereby suspended,” the Presidential Proclamation on the Suspension of Entry of Immigrants Who Will Financially Burden the United States Healthcare System reads.

“An alien will financially burden the United States healthcare system unless the alien will be covered by approved health insurance,” it adds further.

People over age 18, who may be covered under the Medicaid program for the poor, are not allowed entry as per the document issued by the White House.

Employer-sponsored plans and the Medicare program for the elderly are included in the list of insurance types approved by the government for entry into the US.

The order will take effect from November 3.

Last month, the administration said it planned to allow only 18,000 refugees to resettle in the United States in 2020 fiscal year – the lowest number in the history of the modern refugee program.
