Women, children among 40 killed in air raid by Afghan forces

KABUL, Afghanistan: Afghan Special Forces killed at least 40 civilians in an air raid and ground assault on a wedding party on Sunday night.

The operation conducted by the Special Forces was aimed at destroying Taliban hideouts, officials said.

Deputy Provincial Councilman Abdul Majed Akhand said the majority of those killed were women and children attending a marriage ceremony in district Musa Qala.

“Some 40 people were killed and 18 others were wounded and were brought to the hospital,” he said.

“All the victims were civilians,” he further added.

While Provincial Governor’s Spokesperson Omar Zwak told media on Monday, “At least 14 fighters including six foreigners were also killed, adding that authorities were investigating reports on civilian casualties.”

Zwak confirmed that civilians killed were part of the wedding procession that came under fire during an operation targeting a house used by the Taliban.
