Lure them, drown them in alcohol: NYC declares war against rats

NEW YORK, USA: City officials unveiled their latest weapon on Thursday, an alcohol death trap, in a bid to win the war against rats.

Eric Leroy Adams, the Borough President of Brooklyn, is leading this fight against these pests on behalf of the city.

The city said they had finally found a solution: a machine that attracts rats with bait and then triggers a trap door that drops them into a pool of alcohol-based liquid.

“It knocks them out and they drown eventually,” said president of Rat Trap Anthony Giaquinto, who imports the devices from Italy.

The machine, named Ekomille, is battery operated and resembles a cabinet that stands about two feet high.

During a month long trial of the extermination device, 107 rodents met their end around the grounds of the borough hall, officials said.

Rats climb a ladder to eat the bait. A sensor deploys a trip lever which plunges them into a tray that can hold 80 rat carcasses.

“It’s humane and environmentally friendly,” said Adams.

He declared the trial a success and said it would be rolled out in some of Brooklyn’s most rodent-infected districts.

New York had spent millions of dollars over the years to exterminate its unwelcome resident-pests, from birth control to rat-resistant rubbish bins, to no avail.

In January 2019, New York City Housing Authority signed an agreement with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to drastically reduce the number of pests such as rats, mice and cockroaches in its developments by 2024.

Under the agreement with the federal government NYCHA had promised to identify the scope of the pest problem by August 1 and then rid all vermin within a month.

However, the authority had failed to meet its deadline of dealing with the nuisance.

NYCHA acknowledged that the agreement required a significant increase in staffing for extermination, maintenance and other skilled trades workers to meet the target.
