NASSAU, The Bahamas: Prime Minister Hubert Minnis said some areas have been “decimated” as Hurricane Dorian left the Bahamas.
Minnis confirmed the death toll had risen from five to seven, but added “We can expect more deaths to be recorded. This is just preliminary information.”
Local relief group lead Lia Head-Rigby who had flown over the archipelago said her representatives told her there were “a lot more dead”.
“It’s total devastation. It’s decimated. Apocalyptic,” she told the media.
Aerial images of the Abacos show miles of destruction, torn off roofs, dispersed debris, destroyed cars and boats, and inundated houses.
Philip Brave Davis, leader of opposition,described the scenes from a flight over the islands as a “horrible sight”.
Rescuers have begun to reach northern Bahamas which survived Hurricane Dorian’s devastation for nearly two days.
The International Red Cross fears 45% homes,around 13,000 properties,in Grand Bahama and the Abacos have been severely damaged or completely destroyed.
“Some 60,000 people will need food aid and clean water,” United Nations officials said.
People are using social media to find those they have lost contact with during the storm.
PM calls it, “one of the greatest national crises in our country’s history”.
The hurricane has weakened to a category two storm as it trails toward Florida with maximum sustained winds of 110mph (177km/h).
