Fatal coward’s punch attack at Newman pub: Court jails two men for 16 years

PERTH: Two men have been collectively jailed for 16 years brutally torturing to death a man outside a pub in Newman.

They punched, and then kicked in the head of a defenceless man outside a pub in Newman.

Nathan Haynes, 45, died of massive internal injuries after he was brutally assaulted by Saimone Lausii Kala and Oueni Pomana in 2016.

The men had been drinking separately at the hotel – known locally as “The Purple Pub”, when Pomana got into a verbal stoush with friends of Mr Haynes close to closing time.

Pomana, who was said to be very drunk, then carried on the argument outside – knocking one man out with one punch. Kala then did the same to another man.

The court was told the pair then turned their attention to Haynes, who had not been involved in any of the aggravation, and was being dragged away at the time.

Judge Bruno Fiannaca found this morning that Kala punched Mr Haynes to the head, knocking him out, with his head striking to ground.

Witnesses described how Pomana then aimed a “soccer kick” at Mr Haynes head twice, as he lay incapacitated.

The force caused an artery taking blood to Mr Haynes brain to rupture, and he died soon after.

Pomana and Kala were found guilty of manslaughter by a jury, and Justice Fiannaca today jailed both of them while again denouncing the consequences of drunken violence in WA.

“Aiming a kick to the head while he was on the ground … showed a callous disregard to his life,” the judge said.
