Farishta rape-cum-murder case: SHO, IO arrested after registration of FIR

ISLAMABAD: After widespread outrage over the rape and murder of 10-year old girl Farishta, Islamabad police arrested the Satiation House Officer of Shehzad Town and an investigation officer of the case after registering FIR against them.

The police officials were arrested in on late Wednesday night and the two police officials were shifted to the police station and detained there.

On Wednesday night, Prime Minister Imran Khan also took notice of Farishta’s murder and expressed his displeasure over delay in the arrest of the police officer who had refused to register a case.

The prime minister ordered the suspension of the sub-divisional police officer of Shahzad Town and removal of the superintendent of police (rural zone), sources in the police and the capital administration said.

Earlier, Inter-Services Public Relations Director General Maj-Gen Asif Ghafoor took to Twitter to express outrage over the incident.

“Brutal murder of innocent Farishta is highly condemnable,” he wrote. “Those responsible must be brought to justice. The army is ready to provide any support in this regard. We must rise and join to protect our future generations from vile and despicable elements who prey on vulnerable children.”

Farishts’s family says when they approach police they were told the child might have eloped, and they were made to carry out errands for officers.

Farishta vanished in Islamabad on May 15 and later her body was found on May 20. The postmortem report confirms she was raped before being murdered.

The case has been compared to the rape and murder of seven-year-old Zainab Ansari in January 2018 – which sparked outrage and protests across the country. Calls for action are being made on social media, under the hashtag #JusticeFor Farishta.
