LAHORE: Pakistan on Friday handed over captured Indian pilot Abhinandan to India at Wahgah border.
Pakistan Rangers officials handed over the Indian Airforce Wing Commander to Indian Border Security Force officials amid tight security.
Earlier Abhinandan was brought to Wahgah border where after verification of documents he was handed over to Indian officials.
The wing commander was accompanied by Indian High Commission officials who also crossed over to India from Pakistan.
Immediately after Abhinandan release, Pakistan Foreign Office in a statement said the captured Indian Air Force Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman has been returned to India today.
“He was arrested when his military jet MIG-21 crashed in Azad Jammu & Kashmir after being shot down by Pakistan Air Force for violating Pakistani airspace on February 27, 2019,” the Foreign Office stated in the press release.
“While in captivity, he was treated with dignity and in line with international law,” the statement added.
“Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan announced his return as a goodwill gesture aimed at de-escalating rising tensions with India,” it concluded.
