India bans Kashmir’s Jamaat-i-Islami for supporting freedom struggle

NEW DELHI: India imposed a ban on Kashmir’s Jamaat-i-Islami party amid growing tension with Pakistan in the aftermath of Pulwama suicide attack.

India on Thursday banned the Kashmir-based religio-political party, Jamaat-i-Islami (JI), for five years, accusing it of supporting the freedom struggle in the disputed region.

Indian authorities have also arrested over 400 JI leaders and activists in recent days since the Pulwama bombing, a police officer told Reuters.

It is the third ban to be imposed on the organisation, which wants Kashmir to be independent from India.

Following the Pulwama attack, India has made heavy deployments of troops in the militarized region.
