Govt to launch crackdown on hate speech on social media

ISLAMABAD: The federal government on Wednesday announced to launch a crackdown on those involved in hate speech on social media

The government has formed a working group with representatives of the Federal Investigation Agency and other security agencies have been made to regulate social media.

This was announced by Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry while talking to media. He said that the government has prepared a mechanism to keep a check on social media.

Chaudhry said that the government has succeeded in controlling such content on traditional media to a great extent, but is yet to regulate social media.

The information minister said that efforts for implementation of existing laws relating to hate speech and incitement to violence are being made.

“The pace at which informal digital media is taking over the formal media makes it essential for us to regulate it. There must never be any tolerance for hate speech. We will act indiscriminately against individuals who propagate any sort of extremist views,” said Chaudhry.

Recently, the government has announced its plan to establish Pakistan Media Regulatory Authority in place of Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority to oversee print, electronic and social media. However, the plan is being opposed by the media organization, broadcasters, journalists and opposition parties.
