Pemra going to regulate web TV, OTT

ISLAMABAD:The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory (Pemra) is currently in the process of formulating rules and regulations for Over the Top (OTT) and Web TV in the country.

This was stated by Chairman Pemra Muhammad Salim Baig during an interview with a local newspaper.

Baig said that in this regard the authority had held meetings with other regulators like Pakistan Telecommunication Authority for devising a policy.

He informed that the committee comprising PEMRA officers has been formed to frame draft regulations by February 28, 2018.  He said that the committee is working on a daily basis to meet the February 28 deadline.

He added that the regulatory body is going to frame and introduce licensing regimes for the upcoming technologies that include OTT, Web TV etc.

He further added that Pemra has also commenced the process for award of five (05) Teleport Licences and it is hoped that these licences would be issued by the end of this month. After issuance of these Teleport Licences, satellite TV channels would be able to up-link its signals at a lesser cost.

Regarding the DTH licence, the chairman Pemra said that DTH licence will be awarded within this month. This project would bring approximately 500 million dollars investment in Pakistan and generate employment for almost 10,000 people.
