Shyamalan makes a grand comeback with Glass

M. Night Shyamalan may be stuck in his own world but when the writer/director behind The Sixth Sense, Signs and The Village goes back to his roots, Glass is the result. Technically a sequel of Split with characters from Unbreakable barging in, this Sci-Fi flick is a must-watch if you were won over by both the films. The plot keeps you bound to your seats because all three characters (physically three, that is!) get their origin story which was in the making for 19 years, and when it did, it didn’t disappoint at all.

The plot revolves around super-powered beings David Dunn aka The Overseer (Bruce Willis), Kevin Wendell Crumb aka ‘The Beast’ (James McAvoy) and the wheelchair-bound super-villain Mr. Glass (Samuel L. Jackson) meeting each other in a psychiatric facility where security is top-notch, their check-up is three days away and everything seems to favor the hospital. And when the going gets tough, the ‘Glass’ cracks and that’s where the invincible man, the woman-abductor and their brittle-boned adversary meet and fight for supremacy. The origin story of all three characters is something that adds color to the dark tale especially when there is a twist waiting to be discovered.

The film clearly belongs to the youngest cast member James McAvoy who plays 20 characters compared to Bruce Willis and Samuel L Jackson’s one each. The way he effortlessly moves between different personalities and emotions makes you wonder who he will turn into next; he manages to entertain the audience as well as scare them with his ‘Beast’ avatar, and that’s one of the many reasons why you should go and watch the film.

Bruce Willis is the other reason who does a fabulous job as the man who doesn’t get injured, hence immortal and represents the ‘Good’ in the group whereas Samuel L Jackson represents the ‘Bad’, considering his ideas were the reason why we managed to find The Overseer in the first place. He doesn’t have much to do in the first act but when he does, it changes the pace of the movie, such is the intensity of his character. Both ‘The Overseer’ and ‘Mr. Glass’ have an issue to settle which becomes even more interesting once they meet ‘The Beast’ and have a showdown; to know what happens next, you will have to watch the film.

The film may be a low-budget affair with four main characters (the doctor played by Sarah Paulson being the fourth) but with strong content that deconstructs comic books, brilliant direction that doesn’t let you get comfortable with the plot and amazing script that caters to the fans of all three main lead actors, you get a movie that’s worth every rupee. It is in no way the best film of Shyamalan’s career but it isn’t the worst as well (the honor goes to The Last Airbender); he gets to conclude his own superhero franchise on his own terms, shocking the audience with a perfect ending that no one sees coming, but him. He might as well be a superhero himself!
