PPP leader Mukesh Kumar Chawla faces disqualification

KARACHI:  Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader and Sindh Minister for Excise and Taxation Mukesh Kumar Chawla is facing the threat of disqualification as a Sindh High Court bench accepted a petition seeking his disqualification for regular hearing.

A division bench of SHC heard a petition filed by a citizen, Abdul Qayum, seeking disqualification of Chawla for allegedly holding a fake degree.

After hearing preliminary arguments of the petitioner’s counsel, the court accepted the plea for regular hearing. The bench issued notices to the Election Commission of Pakistan and other respondents.

The bench ordered the respondents to file written comments on the petition. It also sought educational degrees of Chawla.

The petitioner claimed that Chawla got educational degrees of Mukesh Kumar Bansari, hailing from Sajawal and submitted the same in the ECP as his degrees.

In 2010, the Hyderabad Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education had officially confirmed to the University of Sindh that no person by the name of Mukesh Kumar Chawla has passed class X and XII examinations held by the board.

The board said in response to the university’s queries about Mr Chawla’s certificates that Mukesh Kumar Bansari did appear in matriculation and intermediate examinations and Mr Chawla’s particulars matched with Bansari’s.

The verification was conducted after a man named Jai Kumar had challenged Mukesh Kumar Chawla’s election as a member of the provincial assembly.

Jai Kumar argued that Chawla’s matriculation, intermediate and BA degree certificates were fake, forged and tampered with.

The petitioner submitted that the year of birth of Mukesh Kumar was 1974, but the year of birth of the person who’s degrees were presented in the ECP was 1980.

He added that Chawla did his matriculation from Karachi in 1992 while Mukesh Bhansari did not matric from Sujawal in 1996.

He pleaded the court to disqualify Chawla for not being honest and trustworthy as per the constitution.
