PESHAWAR: The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) installed a latest full body scanner machine at Baacha Khan International Airport, Peshawar, to curb the attempts of money laundering through the airport.
The objective of the machine is to scan any contraband item or currency that is hidden behind the clothes of any suspected passenger. The machine shall check the said items hidden under the clothes that are attached to the body of any suspected passenger.
It has been reported that foreign currency especially Dollars are carried by passengers beyond the prescribed limit that cause loss to the country whereas Dollars are smuggled also through organized crimes at the airport.
A passenger can carry up to $10,000 or equivalent notes of another currency while going abroad, according to SBP’s foreign exchange rules. People travelling to or from Pakistan can now carry Rs10,000 in cash after the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) raised the limit more than three times in 2017.
Baacha Khan International Airport is one of the major airports of Pakistan where not only sizeable Pakistan workers travel to and from other countries but an increasing number of foreign traders and tourist use the destination frequently throughout the year.
According to the rules, only suspected passengers shall be checked through the machine.
The machine has started off its operations. It was procured by the CAA while Airport Security Force is operating it. It is not harmful and is quite different from the body x-ray machine.
