IHC to hear Nawaz’s plea for suspension of sentence on Monday

ISLAMABAD: A two-member bench of Islamabad High Court (IHC) will hear former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s plea for suspension of his conviction in Al-Azizia reference.

The IHC Registrar fixed the application of Nawaz Sharif for hearing before a two-member bench headed by Chief Justice IHC Justice Atharminallah. Justice Amir Farooq will be the other member of the bench.

The bench will take up the appeal and application for suspension of the conviction in Al-Azizia reference on Monday.

Earlier, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif filed an appeal against his conviction in Al-Azizia reference case in the Islamabad High Court after removing the objections earlier raised by Registrar Office of the court for the third time.

Besides appeal against the conviction, the former PM has also moved an application seeking the court to suspend the decision and grant him bail till disposal of his main appeal.

On December 24, 2018, Accountability Court II Islamabad had sentenced Nawaz to seven years in prison in the Al-Azizia corruption reference and acquitted him in the Flagship reference.

Nawaz had moved the IHC on January 1 against the sentence handed down to him in the Al-Azizia corruption reference. However, the registrar office of IHC returned the petition, saying that it is incomplete.

The appeal was again submitted on January 3, after removing the objections. The IHC registrar, however, again raised objections and returned the plea.

Nawaz’s counsel Munawar Iqbal Duggal submitted the plea for a third time today after removing the registrar’s objections. In the plea, the IHC is requested to grant bail to Nawaz until a decision on the appeal against the verdict is decided.
