SC orders to unfreeze Bahria Town, MDA’s bank accounts

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Friday issued instructions to relevant authorities to unfreeze the bank accounts of Bahria Town and Malir Development Authority’s (MDA) across the country.

A three-member bench issued the order on a civil miscellaneous application (CMA) filed by Bahria Town’s counsel Aitzaz Ahsan.

Through the application, Aitzaz Ahsan has submitted that banks across the country have frozen the accounts of his client on the order of the Supreme Court.

He added that due to the account freezing, Bahria Town is unable to release employees’ salaries and amount for development work.

The counsel pleaded the court to order the banks to unfreeze its client’s accounts.

During the course of hearing of the application, the  Chief Justice of Pakistan said that the court had only ordered “the monitoring of two accounts”.

He added that the FIA exceeded its authority by freezing all accounts of Bahria Town.

Justice Nisar also asked Ahsan why Bahria Town had not changed its name despite the court orders.

Upon this, the counsel replied that the court had given its client six months for the purpose. The top judge replied that he thought the deadline had lapsed.

The counsel added that the renaming process was underway and it would be completed soon.

In March 2015 a court in Rawalpindi had restrained the Bahria town CEO Malik Riaz from using the name ‘Bahria’ for his housing society. In August 2018, a sessions court of Rawalpindi rejected Bahria’s appeal against the court decision to restrain it from using the name.
