At Least 29 Killed as Gunmen Storm Gov’t Building in Kabul

KABUL: At least 29 people have been killed as militants on Monday stormed a building of Afghanistan’s Ministry for Public Work in Kabul, triggering explosions and a gun battle with the police, media reports said.

The siege lasted for about eight hours, leaving 29 dead and over 20 injured.

Casualties could rise as search on the building is still underway, Interior Ministry spokesman Najib Danesh was quoted by media reports as saying.

The militants entered the compound of the ministry after detonating an explosive-laden car outside, an official said on condition of anonymity late Monday.

At least two explosions were heard during the stand-off, according to the official.

The first blast took place at 3:20 p.m. local time (1050 GMT) outside the Ministry of Public Work, where some government entities as well as residential buildings are situated.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.
