If the crescent of the moon does is not seen the current month will go on for 30 days. This occurred in 2016.

So the day of Eid al-Fitr is not known until a day or so before it is expected to happen.

The rules were different before 2002 but still, they based on the moon, some government also seeks astronomical help to for the crescent of the moon.

In Saudi Arabia, the Institute of Astronomical & Geophysical Research of the King Abdul-Aziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) use technology to set the date of policies, events and other civic matters.

North America also use that calendar and European Council for Fatwa and Research (ECFR). But the religious in Saudi Arabia still base their decision after the first night of the lunar eclipse.

What happens during Ramadan?

Ramadan is a month of fasting, Muslims abstain their intake of food, drink, smoking, sex each day, between early month meal (Suhur) and a night-time meal (Iftar).

In the fasting time, Muslims focus their mind in the pray and spiritual reflections including the greater study of Quran.

The seriously ill persons and travelers can take up every day of missed fasting at the later day.

The Seher will be eaten between 2.30am to 3 am, the evening meal (iftar) is eaten around 9pm-9.30pm.
