PESHAWAR – Master batsman of Pakistan cricket team, Younis Khan has on Saturday announced retirement, Pakistantribe.com reported.
The decision came days after skipper Misbah ul Haq decided to bid adieu to Test cricket.
He announced that he will leave cricket after the three-match Test series against West Indies.
Younus has represented Pakistan in 115 Tests scoring 9,977 at an average of 53.06 courtesy 34 tons and 32 half tons.
“I will leave cricket after the West Indies series,” said Younus. “I apologise if I hurt anyone during my cricketing career. It was an honour to represent Pakistan.”
When asked about the effect his and Misbah’s retirement will have on the Test team, Younus said that youngsters always take hold of the reins.
“Whenever big names leave the team, every asks who will lead the team now,” said Younus. “But life goes on. When I came in the national side, there were a lot of stars already present and I used to think that what will happen when they leave. But I led a young side to World T20 and they won it with me. So, whenever old cricketers leave, new ones do take their place.”
Younus then backed Pakistan limited-overs captain Sarfraz Ahmed to become the Test captain.
He also led Pakistan to their only World T20 title in 2009. He represented the Men in Green in 25 shortest-format encounters and scored 442 runs at an average of 22.10.
In the 50-over format, the right-handed batsman played 265 matches for Pakistan, scoring 7,249 with seven centuries and 48 half-tons.
The 39-year-old was recently inducted into Wisden’s list of best cricketers of 2016.
