Pakistan ready to extend military courts for two years

ISLAMABAD – Pakistani political parties finally agreed to extend military courts for further two years, a Pakistani news website reported on Tuesday.

The decision of extension was taken on the condition that a committee will be formulated for the supervision of the National Action Plan, (NAP) reported PakistanTribe.

The meeting was chaired by Speaker Natioanl Assembly, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq where Ishaq Dar (PMLN), Shah Mahmood Qureshi (PTI), Sahibzadha Tariq ullah (JI), Sheikh Rashid (AML), Ghulam Ahmed Bilor (ANP), Aftab Sherpao (QWP), Sheikh Salah udin (MQM) were present during the meeting.

The meeting that was held on Tuesday where participants decided to extend the mandate of military courts as well as formation of a committee for supervision of NAP.

After the meeting, Ishaq Dar while addressing a joint press conference said that all the parliamentary leaders were united on the extension of military courts after eight parliamentary meetings. PPP was absent from today’s meeting.

In order to amend the constitution for authorizing the military courts again, meetings of the national assembly has been suggested on March 3 and 4, saying they hope PPP will also agree to the decision of the meeting regarding the military courts.

Ishaq Dar said that political parties were not agree on few points, therefore they will make few changes and will present the final draft soon.

He said that some leaders in the meeting raised the issue of racial profiling and stereotyping of Pakhtuns in the Punjab province, “I assure you that an action will be taken against those involved in creation of such controversy.”

Shah Mahmood Qureshi said that no politics will be played on the issue of terrorism in the country, adding all the political parties have agreed that Pakistan is confronted with extraordinary situations and for this reason a supervisory committee will examine all the affairs.

MQM leader Farooq Sattar commented that earlier they had supported the military courts but unfortunately the federal and provincial governments are not serious about eliminating terrorism from the country.
