Players should do 100 pushups: Najam Sethi

LAHORE: Reacting to backlash from people on barring Pakistan cricketers from doing pusups, Chairman Executive Committee of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Najam Sethi urged media to refrain from politicizing Pakistan cricket team.

Sethi took twitter to deny media reports that PCB had put any ban on players’ celebrations, saying sajda/pushups etc done are discretion of players.

The PCB highly appreciates fitness training facilities of Pak Army utilized thrice in six years, he said.

“Oh for God’s sake, there is no ban on pushups! In fact I think players should do 100 pushups when they score a century!,” he said.

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq performed several press-ups to celebrate his unbeaten 110 against England in the first Test in London.

His celebration also included a salute to the Pakistan flag flying above the pavilion, in a reference to Pakistan’s gruelling pre-tour boot camp at a military academy in Kakul.

Two days later, the entire team celebrated victory over England in the first Test at Lord’s by performing a series of press-ups.

This style was also copied by former cricketer and commentator David Lloyd.

However, the matter unexpectedly came under discussion in a meeting of lawmakers today, prompting Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chief Executive Najam Sethi to brief the committee.

Sethi told the committee members that the players, who performed the exercise, had no other objective, other than the celebration.

He said the players have been barred to perform celebratory push-ups in the future.

“To whom they want to communicate the message?,” Rana Afzal, a committee member raised the question.

“Better they would perform special prayers (Nawafil),” another committee member Chaudhry Nazeer said, raising objections over the style of celebration.
