Ajmal, Shafiq on the verge of ODI return?

LAHORE: Pakistan’s solid middle order batsman Asad Shafiq and quality off-spinner Saeed Ajmal, with their performance in the ongoing National T20 Cup have proven that they owe a place in national ODI side against West Indies.

While playing from Karachi Whites, Asad Shafiq was Man Of the Match in the first semi-final for his brilliant 55-ball 95 against Peshawar to reach the final of NationalT20 Cup where they will meet Karachi Blues.

He was also the key performer against Islamabad where scored unbeaten 75 runs to take his side to the victory stand.

In his recent statement after the match, Shafiq expressed his desire to play all three formats for his country.

Pakistan headcoach Mickey Arthur recently voiced in favour of stylish batsman stating that he at times, reminds him of great Sachin Tandulker.

The Tribune quoted Arthur saying as, “Technically, Asad Shafiq is our best batsman,” said Arthur while talking to ESPNcricinfo. “When he gets forward he is sideways on. Look at him: short, balanced, punches well off the front foot, cuts exceptionally well. At times I could almost visualise Sachin Tendulkar. That is high praise, and I have told him that.”

On the other hand, Pakistan magician spinner has impressed with his clever bowling. He has so far been the most economical and most wicket-taking bowler in the tournament with 18 wickets in just eight matches.

Representing his stats in the tournament, the legendary spinner stated that he is determined to make his comeback in the national side.

Ajmal was left out after his poor run during the Bangladesh tour last year. He has been struggling to make a place in national team across the formats since then.

With these remarkable performances, both star cricketers are not far away from their ODI selection against West Indies.
