COAS directs DG Rangers to arrest architects Karachi unrest

RAWALPINDI: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif Monday telephoned Director General (DG) of Pakistan Rangers (Sindh) Major General Bilal Akbar.

The DG Rangers briefed General Raheel about violence that erupted in Karachi hours earlier.

During their conversation, the army chief directed Maj-Gen Bilal Akbar to arrest the perpetrators behind the unrest.

Earlier, activists of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) clashed with police and ransacked ARY News office in Karachi, leaving one man dead and seven others injured including Samaa cameraman.

MQM workers also clashed with police on the streets, sparking volleys of gunshots and tear gas at several places across the city, police and witnesses said.

“We have carried out teargas shelling to disperse the mob, who were trying to attack a television office,” senior police officer Saqib Ismail said.

The move comes shortly after MQM announced holding protests in front of SAMAA, Geo News and ARY News against “lack of coverage of the party’s hunger strike” at press club.

Angry MQM protesters surrounded the channel’s office at Madina Mall and tried to barge into the building. They broke the channel’s entry gate and assaulted media workers.

Demonstrators also tried to burn SAMAA’s DSNG, leaving a cameraman wounded.

One unidentified man was killed and seven others injured including SAMAA’s cameraman, according to hospital officials. Demonstrators also tried to burn SAMAA’s DSNG.

“One was brought (to the hospital) dead, who was shot with a gun,” Dr Seemi Jamali, the director at Jinnah Hospital Hospital told AFP.

Heavy police and Rangers teams reached the scene and resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the protestors.  – AFP
