Preview:
Pakistan have to leave the bask of their famous Oval win behind when they step into Dublin’s Malahide as this is a different ball game and Pakistan are not having a good run here.
Currently, Pakistan are placed on ninth in ODI ranking, only above Zimbabwe. Which puts them outside of the automatic qualification places for the 2019 World Cup.
The series against Ireland can be seen as the start Pakistan’s World Cup 2019 campaign, as the Green Shirt will directly fall into a five-match ODI series right after this one.
Pakistan headcoach Mickey Arthur has shown ‘real concern’ regarding team’s placement in ranking.
He believes that the team has more potential than the ranking shows and with the passage of time and with extensive hard work, Pakistan can improve their ranking considerably.
Captain Azhar Ali shares Arthur’s remarks, but so far he has failed to deliver both as a captain and as an ODI batsman.
He was captained as Misbah retired after World Cup 2015. Since then, Pakistan have lost
all major ODI series it played except a 3-2 win in Sri Lanka.
Pakistan was humiliated by Bangladesh with a 3-0 defeat, lost 3-1 in UAE against England and then a 2-0 defeat in New Zealand. Meanwhile, they won 2-0 against Zimbabwe in Pakistan and 2-1 in Zimbabwe against the same opposition.

Ireland on the other hand, were suffering from injury-crisis. Their key fast bowler Rankin has been ruled out of the series due to stress fracture, but the good news is Craig Young has recovered from an elbow injury and is back in squad.
Niall O’Brien has also made a comeback which will strengthen their batting a bit, as Ed Joice in top order was holding the burden so far.
