COLOMBO: Ranked number seven, Sri Lanka whitewashed world number one Test side Australia by 163 runs in the third and final Test at Colombo, Wednesday.
The win saw Sri Lanka complete a 3-0 whitewash against mighty Australia for the first time in history.
With this thumping victory, Lankan tigers not only improved their rankings emphatically, but also dethroned Aussies from their Number 1 spot in ICC Test rankings.
After winning the toss, Sri Lankan skipper Angelo Mathews decided to bat first, in order to get the fourth inning to bowl and test Australia against their quality spin attack.
After loosing 5 wickets on just 26, Sri Lanka went on to post 355 in the first innings, courtesy, Chandimal and DM Silva.
Australia in response, came up strongly and with Steve Smith (113) and Shaun Marsh (130), and posted a total of 379, taking 34 runs lead on Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka were as good in the second innings as they were in the first. With JK Silva getting a hundred, Lankan tigers declared on 347/8, giving Aussies a might target of 324 to win the final battle and save some honour.
But, ruthless Lankans, fought like cornered tigers and won the game by 163 runs to gain four major points which placed them well over South Africa. Sri Lanka in latest Test rankings are placed on 6th while South Africa are on 7th.
