Kashmir under curfew, phones blocked to forestall protest

SRINAGAR: Authorities in Indian-occupied Kashmir imposed curfew on Friday and blocked mobile phone services to stop people from gathering in the streets and stage protests over killing of a prominent freedom fighter Burhan Wani.

At least 34 people have been killed and 3,100 wounded, most of them in police firing, in the worst outbreak of violence in six years in the disputed territory.

Security forces were deployed in Srinagar to enforce the curfew as well as Anantnag district in the south where Burhan Wani, idolised by some Kashmir youth, was killed in a security operation

Only people involved in medical emergencies would be allowed to travel, the state government said in a statement to head off protests after Friday prayers.

On Thursday, a mob set fire to a house in Anantnag in which Wani and his associates were killed after a gun battle with government forces, a government spokesman said.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of All Parties Hurriyet Conference, Syed Ali Gilani, and Hurriyet leaders, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik in occupied Kashmir have strongly denounced the use of brutal force by Indian troops and police against the peaceful protesters.

Indian police is compelling traders and transporters by the puppet authorities not to support the ongoing movement.

The top Hurriyet leaders in a joint statement issued in Srinagar appealed to the people not to fall prey to the nefarious designs of the Indian imperialism or its local stooges and follow the joint programme in letter and spirit, Kashmir Media service reported.

They affirmed their resolve to lead this movement to its logical end no matter how brutal and cruel Indian aggression may be.

The leaders appealed to the imams of the mosques to lead protests against the killing of 40 young brave-hearts who were martyred by the cruel and inhuman Indian troops and police during the last one week. – Agencies
