England squad for first Pakistan Test announced

LONDON: England call-up Gary Ballance and Toby Roland-Jones, for the first Test against Pakistan at Lords, which starts from July 14.

Roland Jones, Middlesex seam bowler who has been in radar of ECB for few seasons has earned the debut call for the Lords’ Test against Pakistan.

He will replace England’s premier fast bowler James Anderson who has not yet recovered from his shoulder injury.

Ben Stokes has also been sidelined as selectors want him to play more cricket after his knee injury. Gary Balance will fit his shoe, while Joe Root has been decided to bat at crucial number 3 position in Tests.

On Root’s promotion, Cook added: “It’s a conversation we’ve had over the last week, it’s the right thing to do, he’s our best player, and it’s quite an Australian thing to do. There’s no reason why he won’t score same amount of runs as at No. 4.”

Pakistan will take its time before they announce their 11 for Lords Test as visitors have one more three-day game, against Sussex at Hove starting on Friday, before the first Test.

England Squad: Alastair Cook, Moeen Ali, Jonathan Bairstow, Gary Ballance, Jake Ball, Stuart Broad, Steven Finn, Alex Hales, Joe Root, Toby Roland-Jones, James Vince, Chris Woakes.
