Eid al-Fitr 2016 moon sighting in USA today

WASHINGTON: Today, July 4, 2016, local moon sighting committees in New York, Washington and in different states of USA are going to see Shawwal (Eid al-Fitr 2016) moon.

However, the Fiqh Council of North America (FCNA), according to astronomical calculation, has already announced that Eid will be celebrated on July 6, 2016.

In either cases, it is most probable the Eid would fall on July 6, 2016 in United states.

Eid al-Fitr is not a  declared a holiday in USA, the businesses and organizations owned my Muslims will revise their timings according to activities of festival. While, the New York’s schools will have a public holiday on Eid.

According to Islamic customs, every month begins with moon sighting. It may cause a variation of the date for Islamic holidays, as the moon sighting begins at sundown the day before the date specified for the holiday.

The Islamic calendar is lunar and the days begin at sunset, so there may be one-day error depending on when the New Moon is first seen.
