WASHINGTON: Local moon sighting committees in New York, Washington and across different states of USA will meet to see Shawwal moon on July 5th Tuesday.
Whereas, the Fiqh Council of North America (FCNA) already announced that Eid will be observed on July 6 as it is basing it on astronomical calculations rather than sightings.
In both the cases, there is a fair chance that Eid al-Fitr 2016 would fall on July 6, 2016 in United States.
Though, Eid al-Fitr is not public holiday in USA, however, many Islamic businesses and organizations alter their work hours during Eid celebrations. Only, the New York city schools observe a public holiday on Eid.
According to Islamic customs, every month begins with moon sighting. It may cause a variation of the date for Islamic holidays, as the moon sighting begins at sundown the day before the date specified for the holiday.
The Islamic calendar is lunar and the days begin at sunset, so there may be one-day error depending on when the New Moon is first seen.
