Colorado mother fights to save son from lion

COLORADO: A Colorado mother has rescued her five-year-old son by physically removing him from the mountain lion after the animal had attacked the boy, officials say.

The incident took place Friday night about 10 miles northwest of Aspen, Colorado, according to the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office.

The mother informed police that her son was playing with his older brother when she heard screams. She dashed out the house where she found the lion on top of her son. She grabbed one of the animal’s paws and stuck her right hand in its mouth to pry it open and free her son’s head, Pitkin County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Buglione said.

The mother suffered minor injuries; bite marks on her hand and scratches on her leg, he added.

The boy is in a Denver hospital with injuries to his face, head and neck and is said to be in a fair condition.

After the attack, the young lion was killed and another found in the area several hours later was also shot, wildlife officials said.

The family has not been identified yet!

Officials say that mountain lions in Colorado are common, but their sightings are rare. According to the estimation, 4,500 mountain lions live in Colorado.

The wildlife department said, “The last known mountain lion attack in the state happened in July 2015 when a young animal attacked a man as he fished in a remote area in northwest Colorado.”

Mountain lions are also known as pumas, cougars and panthers.
