Orlando shooting survivor played dead to save life

ORLANDO: Orlando shooting survivor, Angel Colon, who was shot thrice, describes playing dead while Omer Mateen shot at the people.

Colon told reporters that he continued to shoot at the people on the floor who appeared dead.

The attack is the worst mass shooting in recent US history. There were 53 people who were left injured after the incident.

The gunman was killed in an exchange of fire with police, when he barricaded several people in the bathroom.

Mra Colon was shot in the leg, hand, and hip. He told reporters he could not stop thinking that he was next to die.

He said Mateen had shot dead a girl who was lying next to him.

Colon was grateful to the hospital staff, who had been by his side all the time, and told them: “I will love you guys forever.”

Colon said Mateen was calm as he was killing people.

“This person had to be heartless, ruthless,” he said. “I don’t know how he could do something like this.”

Trauma surgeon Michael Cheatham told various dead had received shots to their head. A victim who was shot in the head was in the intensive care, he added.

Hospital staff described the scene traumatic as the people were bringing victims in their own cars and trucks.

“You can never prepare adequately for this, though we have spent quite some time preparing for this over the years,” said Dr Michael Cheatham.

Though, doctors and the hospital staff are trained to deal with such emergencies, but some of the doctors moved into tears by watching the victims into pain.

Mr Jeh Jonson, the Director of Homeland Security, said “This has become a matter of homeland security.” Further he added, “We need to do something. We need to minimize the opportunities for terrorists to get a gun in this country.”
