ISLAMABAD: Senators belonging to various political parties Friday called for Chairman Senate Mian Raza Rabbani to constitute a separate Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the Upper House for ensuring accountability and transparency in government departments.
Speaking on a Point of Order, Senator Sherry Rehman said she had filed a petition on Thursday at chairman’s office urging him to devise rules and regulations for constituting a separate Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the Senate.
She said the primary work of Senate was to safeguard public interests and ensure accountability. Quoting reports, she said the volume of the reported corruption in the country was Rs 2.2 billion daily and volume of per annum corruption was $8 billion.
The Senate should have to play its role to eliminate this menace from the society.
Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed said the Senate PAC would ensure healthy competition with the Public Accounts Committee of the National Assembly.
Senator Farooq H Naek said separate accountability body of the Senate PAC should be constituted through amending Rules of the Senate.
Joint PAC of the National Assembly and the Senate was impossible as the National Assembly and the Senate have their own rules, he said.
He asked the Chairman to issue ruling and send the matter to committee on Rules of Business before making final decision in this regard.
Senate Chairman Mian Raza Rabbani said he has received a petition bearing the signatures of senators belonging to all parties having representation in the Senate.
He said the Senate’s House Business Advisory Committee had already sought two weeks time for making decision regarding separate PAC of the Senate. He said, “I will decide about the issue after consulting all stake holders after the lapse of two weeks time.” – APP
