After Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Omar’s death, Mullah Akhtar Mansour was not able to completely control the militant organization. Some of them mainly related to al Qaeda submitted to ISIS.
ISIS was looking to strengthen itself in Afghanistan as they seek it as their natural stronghold. They also asked Taliban to submit to their caliphate but Taliban refused and actively started executing their fighters.
After Mansour’s death, who was already struggling to control the organization, the new leadership will find it even more difficult to control all Taliban factions. New Taliban leadership will have to go for more violence to become acceptable through all Taliban factions. If they don’t do this, they might lose within Taliban.
If new Taliban leadership loses control over the organization, rise of ISIS is imminent. Taliban fighters can join ISIS as did the abandoned Iraqi Army in Iraq. Afghan government did not issue any statement to show their pleasure over Mansour’s death unlike president Obama who declared this as a big milestone against Taliban’s insurgency and Afghanistan security.
Afghan government also did not repeat the accusation that Pakistan was providing safe heaven to Taliban Leader, though this was the loud moment. This shows, Pakistan and Afghanistan both understand that if Taliban organization gets broken, they will have to face even worse enemy, which could be ISIS.
Few months back, In his last state of union address, Mr. Obama warned that Pakistan and Afghanistan would continue to face turmoil for decades. According to that time situation, Pakistan was successfully executing operation Zarb-e-Azb.
Taliban agreed to peace talks with Afghan Government. Afghan President Ghani was looking very serious to bring Taliban militancy to negotiations. I was wondering, why president Obama said so? What is the imminent threat to Pak-Afghan security other than Taliban? The only answer making sense now is ISIS.
