Ali Haider Gillani rescued from Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD- Ali Haider Gillani, son of former Prime Minister, Yousaf Raza Gillani has been rescued from Afghanistan as a result of a joint operation carried out by US and Afghan forces in Ghazni.

He was held captive for three years by militants. Ali Haider was abducted from a pre-election rally in Multan.

The news came to surface from the tweet of Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, which informed that former Prime Minister, Yousuf Raza Gillani received call from ambassador of Afghanistan that his son has been recovered in a successful operation in Afghanistan.

This news was confirmed in a statement issued by Foreign Office after a short while. Foreign Office said that Ali Haider would be transferred to Pakistan after the required medical check-up and that arrangements were being made in this regard. It was alleged that his condition was not well.

“The Afghan National Security Adviser, Mr. Mohammad Hanif Atmar, in a telephone call to the Adviser to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs, Mr. Sartaj Aziz, informed that Mr. Ali Haider Gilani son of Mr. Yusuf Raza Gilani, former Prime Minister of Pakistan, has been recovered today in a joint operation carried out by the Afghan and US security forces in Ghazni, Afghanistan,” said the statement from the Foreign Office.

According to the details, Ali Gillani has been shifted to Bagram Airbase from where he would travel home. His brother Ali Musa Gilani said, “I can’t wait to meet him. My mother is overwhelmed with emotion. I cannot explain in words how traumatic the three years were for our family.”

The news ensued a wave of jubilance throughout the party and workers started gathering in front of Gillani house, dancing and celebrating. Army chief, Raheel Sharif and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif congratulated ex-prime minister.

There was a rally of PPP arranged in Baagh, Azad Kashmir where the ex-prime minister is giving address right now.
