ISLAMABAD- World Asthma Day is aimed to raise awareness, care and support for those affected by asthma. Here we are to help fulfilling the purpose of this day and spread awareness regarding this disease.
On World Asthma Day, here are a few facts regarding the disease,
Asthma is a chronic disease of the lungs which ensues breathing problems.
Causes
Asthma results out of inflammation (swelling in airways. When the attack happens, the lining of the air passage swells and the muscles surrounding the airways become tight. This lessens the amount of air that passes through airway.
Triggers
Asthma symptoms can be triggered by breathing in substances called allergens or triggers. These can be animals (hair or dander), dust mites, certain medicine, weather change, chemicals in air or food, exercise, mold, pollen, respiratory infections, strong emotions (stress), tobacco smoke, and family history. All these can result in Asthmic symptoms, which brings us to what these symptoms are.
Symptoms
Symptoms include cough (with or without phlegm), pulling in of the skin between the ribs when breathing, shortness of breath that gets worse with exercise or activity, wheezing, and emergency symptoms that need prompt medical help
Bluish color to the lips and face
Decreased level of alertness, such as severe drowsiness or confusion, during an asthma attack
Extreme difficulty breathing
Rapid pulse
Severe anxiety due to shortness of breath.
Sweating
Abnormal breathing pattern –breathing out takes more than twice as long as breathing in
Breathing temporarily stops
Chest pain
Tightness in the chest
Treatment
Follow your doctor’s instructions on taking medicines, avoiding triggers, and monitoring symptoms.
