Here are a few facts about World Press Freedom Day

Press Freedom Day is celebrated on May 3rd, every year worldwide. World Press Freedom Day is aimed to remind the world that in around whole world publications are censored, fined and closed down. Here journalists are harassed, attacked, detained and sometimes murdered.

World Press Freedom Day basically is a global observance that emphasizes the fact that freedom of information is a basic human right.

The reason for why this date is adopted by United Nations in 1993 is that it commemorates the anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek, which is the statement of free press principles gathered by newspaper journalists in Africa.

This declaration calls for free, independent, pluralistic media worldwide, characterizing free press as necessary to democracy and as a fundamental right.

Theme for 2016’s world press freedom day is, Access to Information and Fundamental Freedoms – This Is Your Right.

This year’s WPFD focuses on three different aspects of press freedom:

Freedom of information as a fundamental freedom and as a human right.

Protecting press freedom from censorship and surveillance overreach.

Ensuring safety for journalism online and offline.

Secretary General UN, Ban Ki Moon has said on this day,

“On this World Press Freedom Day, I urge all Governments, politicians, businesses and citizens to commit to nurturing and protecting an independent, free media. Without this fundamental right, people are less free and less empowered. With it, we can work together for a world of dignity and opportunity for all.”
