South Africa banned from hosting cricket tournaments

LONDON: South African government has banned country’s four sports bodies from hosting major tournaments in the country for a year, for ignoring native blacks.

South Africa’s sports minister, Fikile Mbalula, banned Cricket South Africa (CSA) from hosting any major international tournaments after the cricket board failed to meet several transformational targets.

The rugby, athletics and netball federations were also handed out similar sanctions on Monday (April 25), which will be reviewed again in 2017, reported cricbuzz.

The 2020 Under-19 World Cup was scheduled to be held in South Africa but that aside, the country hasn’t been put down to host any other ICC tournament at least until 2023. But, unless they get cleared, CSA won’t be able to express interest in hosting any major tournaments in the future.

“I have resolved to revoke the privilege of Athletics South Africa (ASA), Cricket South Africa (CSA), Netball South Africa (NSA) and South African Rugby (SARU) to host and bid for major and mega international tournaments in the Republic of South Africa as a consequence of the aforementioned federations, not meeting their own set transformation targets with immediate effect,” Mbalula said.

“I will review this decision when considering the results of the 2016/2017 Transformation Barometer.”
