These are the discoveries since last Earth Day,

Scientists discovered an entirely new, 600 mile long coral reef at the mouth of Amazon. But there is a bad news regarding coral reefs as well. In Australia, around 93% of the Great Barrier Reef has been destroyed by coral bleaching.

Dozens of additional species have been discovered, a few of which were thought to be extinct. Furthermore, there are around 4 million species yet to be discovered. As for species who were considered as extinct, and have been found now, Bouvier’s red colobus monkey, which lives in the Republic of Congo, is a fair example.

Earth has 3 trillion trees, which exceeds our estimates. But that does not mean that we should be on a tree cutting spree now. The planet has 3.04 trees according to the satellite imagery and ground based surveys, way more than the previous estimate of 400 billion.

We got to know that unicorns and humans once co-existed. In March 2016, a study in the American Journal of Applied Science described a skull discovered in Kazakhstan that suggests that a subpopulation of, “unicorns” still roamed the Earth just 29,000 years ago. They may have even coexisted with humans.

West Antarctic’s ice sheet can melt faster than we realized. In March 2016, scientist observed the West Antarctic’s Ice Sheet which has been melting fast. This is because humans are burning fuels and increasing global warming. Experts assumed that this melting would not happen for years and years.
