Previously it was believed that dinosaurs went extinct because of the asteroids hitting earth. But now scientists found a new theory about dinosaur extinction.
This new theory suggests that dinosaurs were already headed toward extinction at least 40 million years before the asteroid apocalypse.
It is a new intuition into the end of Mesozoic era and is a blunt warning that modern animals risk the similar fate.
Previous studies used to count fossils to estimate the dinosaur populations but this time scientists have used fossils to build a giant evolutionary tree.
From this tree, they noticed an early surge as lots of new dinosaur species formed. But that diversity slowed down and then began to decline. More and more species started going extinct, and less came to fill the vacuum.
Then, a massive asteroid hit the coast of modern day Mexico and put a full stop to their life. So, what was responsible for their extinction?
Scientists have identified several possible factors like super continents breaking apart, volcanic eruptions, climate change, and changing sea levels.
Scientists emphasize that these results should serve as a warning to us. Because humans are driving species to extinction at a rate higher than ever recorded. If that is suddenly accompanied some unexpected catastrophe, we may experience a mass extinction which we have not seen for 66 million years.
