Nonplussed
You may think it means undisturbed but it actually means utterly baffled. The word comes from the Latin non plus, meaning “no more”, basically it means a state in which one can say, think or do no more.
Inflammable
Most people believe it means not flammable. But it means super flammable. Basically, here the mistake is made because of the dual meanings of the prefix, ‘in’. In some cases it means ‘not’ while in others it means ‘into’.
Ir-regardless
Majority believes it means regardless but it is the other way round. It means with regard, or nothing at all. Its prefix and suffix cancel each other and literally the word means, ‘not without regard.
Enervated
You perceive it as energized but refers to weakened. So, it means to weaken.
Factoid
People think it means fun fact but it actually means fun ‘false’ fact. The fact which widely believed but not true.
Outlaw
Most of the people believe that it means one who has broken the law but it actually means one who is outside the protection of law. An outlaw has lost his legal protection.
