Saudi Grand Mufti defends ban on Women driving

RIYADH- Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah al-Sheikh has defended the ban on women driving and exclaimed that it is “a dangerous matter that exposes women to evil”.

He further exclaimed that men with ‘weak spirits’ and those who are ‘obsessed with women’ can cause harm to female drivers. He expressed these views in an interview to a religious channel, Almajd.

He also said that women driving will make it difficult for family members to know about their whereabouts.

It is pertinent to mention here that technically women driving is not illegal, it is forbidden as a local license is required which is not issued to women.

Apart from that, the Grand Mufti also barred Muslims of Saudi Arabia from playing chess, for being the game which shows ‘enmity and hatred’. Not only this he also claimed Twitter to be the “source of all evil and devastation”, and the use of the social media site “promotes evil and harm”.
