William Shakespeare’s skull found missing from his grave

LONDON- Researchers at the Center of Archeology at Staffordshire University have found an evidence that William Shakespeare’s skull is missing from his grave located at Holy Trinity Church.

The inscription on Shakespeare’s grave reads, “Curst be he that moves my bones” but unfortunately someone has done this.

According to the researchers, Shakespeare’s skull was stolen from his grave by a local doctor in 1794. The research project began in 2010, when Mr. Colls (presiding researcher) was working on another excavation project at the site of Shakespeare’s family home in Stratford.

The former rector at Holy Trinity Church approached him about the possibility of examining the grave site, which has been the subject of rumors for years.

The research began in 2010 but it was inconclusive and thus was resumed in 2013. Radar imaging was used and actual work started in 2014. The examination of Shakespeare’s grave revealed that the bottom half of was consistent with the other graves on site, showing the signs that it remained undisturbed.

“His head end,” however, “was completely different,” Mr. Colls said, a clear indication to the team that the grave had been disturbed.

After that, the team started probing into the archives and found a report of a 1794, grave robbery by a doctor, Frank Chambers; it was printed in the late 19th century in a thinly circulated magazine. The report had been generally debunked, but as the team looked closer, kernels of truth emerged.

They claimed the story of grave-robbery unbelievably accurate. The assumed objective behind this robbery was to study his skull and compare the difference between his and an ordinary skull.

This is not so unusual because the late 18th century marked the early years of phrenology, a pseudoscience that looked for clues to intelligence in the size and shape of people’s heads.
