Australia beat Pakistan to keep hope alive

MOHALI: Australia beat Pakistan by 21 runs in a crunch game of ICC WT20 216 at t Mohali Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium Mohali, Chandigarh.

Australian skipper Smith won the toss and elected to bat first on a batting friendly pitch, and despite loosing back to back wickets, kept scoring at a brisk pace.

Smith’s captain inning with 61 off 43 and then Shane Watson’s down the order firepower (41 off 21) helped Australia to post a sizable total of 193/4 in the first innings.

Afridi (27-0-4) was the only Pakistani bowler to concede under 30 runs.

Pakistan took a confident start, and despite losing Shehzad early, they kept scoring runs at brisk rate.

Demise of Sharjeel (30), Umar Akmal (32) and then Afridi (14), broke the run-chase momentum and pressure began to mount on Pakistan.

Not enough firepower down the order, Sarfraz not coming to bat for unknown reasons let down Pakistan’s chase once again and fell 22 runs short of the target.

Australia’s James Faulkner bowled brilliantly for 27/5.

With third consecutive defeat, this is curtains for Pakistan in WT20, their return to Pakistan is on cards, and some BIG DECISIONS too.
