All you need to know about Asperger’s syndrome

It seems that Bollywood is going to teach us something useful finally. After Honey Singh’s revelation about him suffering from Bipolar Disorder, several people got familiar with the name of this mental condition. Now Hrithik’s allegation about Kangana having Asperger’s syndrome has made us to get acquaint with another developmental condition.

Here is all you need to know about Asperger’s syndrome,

What is Asperger’s?

Also called Asperger’s disorder, the condition falls on the autism spectrum, of which AS is a relatively mild expression. While studies on the cause of Asperger’s have been inconclusive, the heft of the research indicates that genetics have a major part to play, though environmental factors cannot be ruled out.

A difficult diagnosis

The behavioral traits of children with Asperger’s are frequently misinterpreted by parents as laziness, shyness or introversion.

Because the disorder isn’t well documented, feedback from external sources, such as school and extended family, can be negative. A common aspect among those suffering from Asperger’s is that they don’t like breaking a pattern, which could be misconstrued as a fussy personality trait.

Spotting the signs

The most easily identifiable symptom of AS is the fixation with one topic. This single-minded obsession can lead to sufferers becoming monotonous in their interaction, which can then pose a challenge in forming relationships. The person is usually unable to understand the other person’s emotions in this condition.
