NEWYORK: Baseball players have been subjected to high speed hits at the swings especially the ones that throw the ball back at the pitcher. There have been injuries and the growing concerned called for a hi-tech solution.
During last 5 years 12 pitchers have been struck by the ball travelling over 90 miles per hour and Boombang was selected from 20 companies making protective gear. Pitchers hardly get time to react after making their landing to react appropriately to the high speed hit and it can cause serious injuries. Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Jared Hughes recently had a relatively safe encounter.
Jared Hughes is now among the 20 big leagues pitchers trying out the new carbon fiber half cap during spring training. The design is a hybrid between a conventional baseball cap and the helmet. The lightweight Half cap can withstand impact from baseballs travelling as fast as 90 miles per hour and comes with a ear cover.
