Malinga steps down as Sri Lanka captain just before T20 CWC

COLOMBO: Fast bowler of Sri Lankan cricket team Lasith Malinga stepped down as a captain of Sri Lankan T20 just before the International Cricket Council (ICC) Cricket World Cup, TheNewsTribe.com reported.

According to reported, all-rounder Angelo Mathews, who leads the Sri Lankan team in One day Internationals and Test match will be the captain of all three formats.

SLC Vice President Mohan de Silva said Malinga had written to the SLC on Sunday night offering to step down down.

“He will continue to make himself available for selections,” de Silva said. It is speculated that the SLC management is unhappy with Malinga’s policy of selecting games and tournaments to play based on his recurring injury.

In Asia Cup 2016, Malinga only played just opening match of the tournament and suffered through knee injury.
