Quaid-e-Azam becoming ‘oppressed character’ of our history: Dr Safdar Mahmood

ISLAMABAD: Renowned columnist and writer Dr Safdar Mehmood has said that the Quaid Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah is becoming ‘oppressed character’ of our history- courtesy our so-called intellectuals.

In his write up, Dr Mahmood said that some intellectuals carrying their own agendas are busy in assuming and spreading meaning of the Quaid’s speeches and statements of their own interests. We should study any great leader above our personal interest, agenda and ideology.

He criticised a writer who in his recent column had written that Quaid–e-Azam while addressing the US people over radio on February 1, 1948 said Pakistan will not become a religious state where priests will rule under the divine right. He said that the writer chose only a statement that suited his interests. In the same address, Quaid had said that “Pakistan is the premier Islamic state”, but the ‘columnist’ did not mention that part of the speech, Dr Mehmood added.

He said that there is no concept of a religious state in Islam as such a state imposes religion upon masses and does not give equal rights to minorities. However, Islamic state gives equal rights to minorities.

Dr Mahmood reminded that on Jan 25, 1947 on the eve of Miladun Nabi PBUH at Karachi Bar Quaid-e-Azam termed the elements as mischievous which had claimed that the Shariah will not be the basis of Constitution.
