47 executed in Saudi Arabia over terror charges

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has executed at least 47 people on Saturday over terrorism charges, including the prominent Shia Muslim cleric Nimr al-Nimrits, TheNewsTribe.com learnt from International media.

Interior Ministry of Saudi Arabia said in a statement.Most of those executed were involved in a series of attacks carried out by al-Qaeda from 2003-06, it said. Shia Iran has warned that executing Nimr “would cost Saudi Arabia dearly”.

The death sentence of Nimr al-Nimr, who led the anti-government protests in the country’s east, was confirmed by the the Supreme Court in October.

Saudi Arabia carried out at least 157 executions in 2015, with beheadings reaching their highest level in the kingdom in two decades, according to several advocacy groups that monitor the death penalty worldwide.
